The HP Pro M402 monochrome printer has an OEM-rated print speed of 40 pages per minute (ppm) and a monthly duty cycle rating of 80,000 pages. The multifunction (MFP) version, the Pro MFP M426, has the same print specifications, with copy, scan and fax functions added.

Canon has several models based on the same print engine, including but not limited to the LBP214 and LBP215 printers and the MF424 and MF429 multifunction printers (MFPs). All of the Canon models have the same print specifications as their HP equivalents.

The only supplies item is an all-in-one toner cartridge (the maintenance kit must be replaced by a service tech). Replacement all-in-one cartridges have OEM-stated page yields of up to 3,100 pages (standard yield) and 9,000 pages (high yield) for HP and 3,100 pages (standard yield) and 9,200 pages (high yield) for Canon. The base M402n model ships with a pre-installed introductory cartridge yielding 1,500 pages, while the LBP214 and LBP215 ship with a 1,600 page yield starter cartridge. All other models ship with the 3,100 page standard yield cartridge.

Cartridges for both OEM's printers require a chip for correct printer operation.
